Something that I have learned along the way in my life is how difficult it can be to get to know somebody that you just met, especially honing in on what they are truly interested in. Fortunately, my business coach Rich Bernstein taught me a great trick to use when first meeting somebody called F.O.R.D.
F.O.R.D simply stands for Family, Occupation, Recreation, and Dreams. It is these things that people simply love to talk about, and allows you to truly understand a person when you first meet them.
Ask about where they are from, what brought them to the place that you’re meeting them at, if they have any brothers or sisters, etc.
Ask them what they do for a living, why they chose to pursue that career, or if they plan on doing something else for a living. If they are in school, ask them what they’re going to school for and what makes them passionate about that career. A good question to ask is what their favorite part of their job is, as well as what they struggle the most with.
Ask them what they like to do for fun, and what their favorite thing about that is. If they mention something that you are interested in as well, let them know about it and continue the conversation by talking in more detail about that activity.
Everybody has dreams. To some, it is being wealthy on a deserted island. To others, it may just be completing their education.
